Appellate Defense Counsel, The Judge Advocate General’s Corps, United States Air Force

Major Frederick Johnson, who goes by Eric, serves as an active-duty attorney in the Air Force’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps. Currently, he represents Air Force and Space Force members worldwide in their appeals before the Air Force Court of Criminal Appeals, the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, and the Supreme Court of the United States. He has previously served as a trial defense counsel and as the chief of military justice, adverse actions, and general law in a base legal office.  He earned his commission in 2012 as a Distinguished Graduate of the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps at the University of Georgia. 

Major Johnson attended Emory University School of Law as a Robert W. Woodruff Fellow and a student in the Air Force’s Funded Legal Education Program, graduating with high honors. While in law school, he co-directed the Civil Rights and Liberties Moot Court Competition, an annual tournament hosted by Emory Law’s Moot Court Society.  He also researched Law of Armed Conflict issues as part of the International Humanitarian Law Clinic and interned for one year in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia. Additionally, he served for two years as a justice on the Student Bar Association’s Professional Conduct Court, and his work in this area led to him receiving the 2020 Robert Beynart Award for Professionalism and Ethics.  

Major Johnson and his wife, Christine Johnson 20L, live with their dog, Ace, in northern Virginia. In his free time, he is an avid outdoorsman and an active member of the Shenandoah Mountain Rescue Group, a volunteer search and rescue team.
