Jonathan Valyou 22C

Applied and Computational Mathematics PhD Candidate and Tam Family Fellow, Florida State University

Jonathan Valyou, from St. Augustine, Florida, is an Emory Woodruff Scholar Alumnus who graduated from Emory in 2022 with a major in Applied Mathematics and a minor in Physics. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Applied and Computational Mathematics at Florida State University where he is the President of the Society for Applied and Industrial Math(SIAM) Chapter at FSU and an undergraduate research mentor through the Directed Reading Program at FSU. His current research involves data assimilation and path planning with uncertainty. During his time at Emory, Jonathan served as the Fundraising Chair for the Atlanta Pediatric Cancer Outreach Program, was a member of the Emory Undergraduate Mathematics Majors Association, worked as an Undergraduate Chemistry Lab Teaching Assistant, defended his Honors Thesis entitled "Nonnegative Matrix Factorization for Music- Tuning the NMF Algorithm with Regularization" earning Highest Honors, was a SIRE Scholar presenting Neural Network Research at the Spring Emory Undergraduate Research Symposium, and worked on Deep Generative Learning Models through the Emory 2021 Summer REU in Data Science.  He enjoys playing the euphonium, watching soccer games, studying new languages, and traveling and learning about other cultures. He plans to spend the next few years working towards his PhD, teaching undergraduates, conducting research, attending conferences, and utilizing mathematical tools to understand and develop research and solutions that solve health, social, and societal problems.
